Letter from Raymond Jessop to His Family

Well Hi everybody. It is about 9:00 am. I am in Huntsville, Texas. I think it is about 60 or 70 miles [actually over 100 miles] east of Austin. They transported me over here yesterday. I think we got here at about 1:30 pm. Is everybody doing all right? Is everybody healthy and strong? I am doing fine. This is very much a new experience and Wow! All I can say is, it is a new experience. I know Heavenly Father and the Angels are close by. I only pray for the strength of Heavenly Father to bear me up and help me be a good representation. I pray our dear Prophet will have health and strength and that he will be delivered. It is my Yen’s [daughter Millennia’s] birthday today. Please give her a big hug for me. Mary, please tell Grandfather where I am. I hope to be able to get commissary in a few days so I can write more letters and get envelopes and stamps, etc. I don’t know how long I will be here. It could be up to 60 days. No family visits, no phone calls. Only attorney visits. This is a classification unit and it takes 45 to 60 days for them to classify you and then send you to the big prison. I don’t know how big this place is, but I am guessing there must be two or three thousand inmates here. (Just guessing) Well, I surely do miss everyone. I am praying for you and I know you are praying for me. I so much love all of you. I hope all of you know it, from the oldest to the youngest. You are all in my prayers. Please write back and let me know how you’re doing.
 
P.S. Mary, you might have already done it by the time you get this letter, but all my stuff is over at the Sheriff’s office. Just call them and make arrangements to pick it all up. By the way, I forgot to tell you, one of the first things they do when you come in here is shave your head, so my head is very much shaved right now. It feels like my face does when I haven’t shaved for 2 or 3 days so I am sure my buzz is a lot more buzzy than Par’s. The only thing they let you wear is a pair of white boxer shorts and a pair of white coveralls without any sleeves, so things are a little breezy. We won’t even talk about what it’s like at shower time. Wow! Might as well be a herd of cows getting ran through the chute.  Sure grateful for the shower though. I discovered that the County Jail is slightly clean compared to here. I was flipping roaches off my bed and off the wall through the night. I am doing ok, though. I want you to know that. It’s just “welcome to the pen.” I hope an attorney will come and see me and let me know how the appeals is going. I do have my Triple [Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price]. I also have five picture pages. I am so very grateful they would let them in. I am just a looking forward to your return letter. Man, that sure was a blessing to get to talk to you on the phone every day and see you once a week. Oh, guess what else, there is a huge window right in front of my cell, and I can see sunshine and trees and grass and hills and cars going past. I am on the second story in a tiny 5’ x 10’ or so cell. I share it with another man—pretty squishy. I have the top bunk.
