Britton’s Story

Many of the children removed from the YFZ Ranch by Texas authorities in early April still suffer the effects of the trauma they experienced in being torn from their mothers and spending almost two months in foster care.
Three-year-old Britton Keate was among the young children separated from their mothers at the Coliseum in San Angelo on April 24, 2008, when CPS workers and state troopers literally had to physically peel screaming children from their mothers. The scene was so heart-rending that some of the policemen wept with the mothers, who were then placed on buses and either returned to the Ranch or transported to a women’s shelter. Only the mothers with children twelve months old and younger were permitted to remain with their children.
Britton’s father recently sent the following account of his son’s experience:

April 24, 2008 was a very significant day in Britton's life. Not only was it his 3rd Birthday, but it was also the day CPS took his mother away from him at the Coliseum in San Angelo. His mother, knowing what was coming, through choked-back tears wished him a happy birthday and "Heavenly Father will take care of you" just before she was forced away from him and his 5 siblings, leaving them all crying, sobbing, and screaming in terror. Britton was later taken to St. PJ's in San Antonio for foster care, along with his 6 year old sister Natalie, and his 18 month little brother Jamison.
When Britton was returned to us, we heard what happened to him while at the shelter through his own words:

"Mother, didn't you hear me? Didn't you hear me call you? I was crying on my bed. They took my blanket away from me. Miss Tiffany is mean! I don't like her. They made me cry on my bed."
The mother present told us the caretakers tried to take Britton's blanket away from him, but he would say, "No! You can't have my blanket. It smells like my mother." Britton would drag the blanket everywhere he went, refusing to let it go. She said the caretakers would take it from him if he cried, and would let him cry on his bed without it. There was one caretaker named Paula that became attached to him, and would take pity on him and give him his blanket when she would get a chance, to help him stop crying. From what we understand Paula also bought our boys clothing with her own money. In the grateful expressions of our little boy he says "I like Miss Paula, she loves me".

In spite of the kindness shown by Miss Paula (for which we are very grateful) the following video tells his true desires. He never wants to go back to his shelter. He wants to stay with us.
Britton was potty trained before he was taken, and now his mother has tried to retrain him without success twice. Also, he will not sleep without mother or father near by ever since his experience. Even at nap time during the day he has to have his mother rock him.
